Mankind always was searching for a way to move faster and more efficient. In space Flight there was always the Problem that there is no Medium where a mechanic Part can "paddle". In Water and Air you can use a Propeller. Since in space the Matter is so less dense, there is no machanical Part that can archieve a Force that is strong enough to accelerate a decent Mass.

Today we know how to generate Magnetic Fields, large and strong enough, to accelerate hughe Masses. Perfect for space travel, since in space everything is eighter ionised (Atoms) or static loaded (Chemical Bonded Atoms, like dust, asteroids). This is because in Space electrical current can't be conducted. So every Matter in Space is affected by a Magnetic Field.
There are already Theories and first Experiments done on such Propulsions. The best Theory is the Bussard Ram Jet. The problem of the Theory of Robert W. Bussard was, he wants to use the gathered Ions of Hydrogen to be used as a Fusion Fuel. This was a killer, since we cant even handle Fusion on Earth (not yet). But the only thing that has to be changed in this Theory is that the gathered Ions and Dust should be accelerated by a kind of a Rail-Gun Pipe. In such a Pipe the gathered Ions can be accelerated up to imense high velocities.
This means if a very low Mass is accelerated to very high velocity, the high Mass of a "Ship" still gains a significant acceleration. This Theory is already used in the Ion Propulsion, where Xenon Gas is first ionised (stripping electrons) and then accelerated backwards and then feeded the stripped electrons back, what makes it glowing so nicley blue.
An ion thruster ionizes a neutral gas by extracting some electrons out of atoms, creating a cloud of positive ions. These thrusters rely mainly on electrostatic as ions are accelerated by the Coloumb Force along an electric field. Temporarily stored electrons are finally reinjected by a neutralizer in the cloud of ions after it has passed through the electrostatic grid, so the gas becomes neutral again and can freely disperse in space without any further electrical interaction with the thruster. Electromagnetic thrusters on the contrary use the Lorenz Force to accelerate alls species (free electrons as well as positive and negative ions) in the same direction whatever their electric charge and are specifically referred as plasma propulsion engine, where the electric field is not in the direction of the acceleration.
